Protostar

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A protostar is a very young star. It is the first step in making a star.

It begins in a big cloud of gas. This cloud has a dense core. Gravity pulls the core inward. This causes the core to collapse. As it collapses, the core gets thick and heavy.

The gas falls toward the center. Much of this gas forms a flat disk. This is called a protoplanetary disk. The gas hits the surface of the star. This creates shocks that give off power.

A protostar is not as hot as a regular star. Inside, it starts a small change. It fuses deuterium, which is a type of hydrogen. This makes helium-3. This process gives off heat. This heat helps the star stay a certain size.

You cannot see a protostar with your eyes. It is hidden by dust. The dust blocks light. Instead, we find them using infrared light. This is light with long waves. For a small star like our Sun, this stage lasts 500,000 years.
