One theory says it comes from a Siculian word for a marsh. This name might mean "abundance of water." Another idea links it to a Proto-Indo-European word meaning "saltwater." A third theory suggests a Semitic origin. This could mean "East," "salty," or "sirocco." These theories show how many cultures have touched this land.

Archaeologists found that people lived in this region for a very long time. Evidence shows continuous habitation since the Neolithic period. One important group was the Stentinello culture. This culture produced artifacts dating back to 6000 BC. The city of Syrakousai was officially founded by Corinthians in 733 BC.

The leader of these colonists was named Archias. They first landed on the island of Ortygia. From there, they grew into a powerful Greek colony.

During the classical age, Syracuse was a massive metropolis. It was one of the largest cities in the ancient world. It even rivaled Athens in its power and splendor. The city was often ruled by powerful leaders called tyrants. Six leaders were especially famous: Gelon, Hiero I, Dionysius I, Agathocles, and Hiero II. The general Timoleon also provided a period of moderate rule. These leaders helped Syracuse control much of Sicily. They also established commercial outposts across the Mediterranean.

Syracuse was a center for great thinkers and scientists. The most famous resident was the mathematician Archimedes.

The city's history includes many different rulers. It became the capital of the Byzantine Empire under Constans II. Later, it was the capital of Sicily for many centuries. This changed after a Muslim invasion in 878. After a Christian reconquest, it became a Norman county. During the Spanish era, the city became a fortress. A massive earthquake in 1693 destroyed much of the center. This led to the reconstruction of Ortygia in the Baroque style.
