Catania is a major municipality located on the east coast of Sicily.
The city's geography has deeply influenced its name and development. The name Catania may come from the ancient Sicel word *katane*. This word can mean a "grater" or a "skinning place." Other translations suggest "harsh lands" or "rugged soil." This makes sense because the city sits in a black-lava landscape. For many centuries, the city has been rebuilt following volcanic eruptions. Around 900, the city was part of an Arabic emirate. During this time, it was called *Balad al-fīl*, meaning "the Village of the Elephant." This name likely refers to an ancient lava sculpture. This sculpture is now a fountain in Piazza Duomo.
Catania has a long history of surviving geologic catastrophes. The city was almost completely destroyed by a massive earthquake in 1169. In 1669, a major eruption of Mount Etna sent lava flows toward the city. The lava nearly swamped the urban area.

The foundations of the city date back to the 8th century BC. Chalcidian Greek settlers founded the colony of Katane. They arrived from Naxos and established an acropolis on Monte Vergine. This hill offered a defensible position west of the current center. In 476 BC, the ruler Hieron of Syracuse expelled the original inhabitants. He replaced them with people from Leontini. Hieron even renamed the city Aetna after the nearby volcano. The original Greek citizens eventually returned to the city in 461 BC. Later, the city fell under Roman rule after the First Punic War in 263 BC.
Catania has been a significant center for culture and education. In 1434, the city founded Sicily's first university. During the 14th century and the Renaissance, it was a political and artistic leader. Many famous Italian figures are linked to the city. The composers Vincenzo Bellini and Giovanni Pacini were born there.
