During the Roman siege, Archimedes used innovative technology to defend his city. He oversaw the use of improved catapults and large cranes. These cranes used iron claws to lift Roman ships out of the water and drop them back in.
Archimedes' life ended during the fall of Syracuse. 
Although his mathematical writings were not widely known in antiquity, they survived through careful preservation. Alexandrian mathematicians quoted him, and later, Isidore of Miletus created a comprehensive compilation in Byzantine Constantinople. In the 9th century, his works were translated into Arabic. They were later translated into Latin during the 12th century. These translations provided essential ideas for the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution.
