Rocks can bend into amazing shapes. One special shape is called a syncline.

A syncline is a fold in rock layers. It is an important part of structural geology. This study looks at how rocks move. These folds show us how the Earth changes. They help us understand the ground beneath our feet.

How does a syncline work? It happens when the Earth's crust bends. This usually occurs during orogeny. Orogeny is the way mountains are built. It happens because of compression. This means the ground pushes together.

Most synclines look like a trough or a bowl. These are called synforms. Sometimes, the rocks turn over. This creates an antiformal syncline.

Geologists use maps to find these folds. They look for a sequence of rock layers. The youngest rocks sit at the center. This center part is called the hinge. The layers on each side move in reverse.

If the fold is circular, it forms a basin. Some synclines are even larger. These are called synclinoria. A synclinorium has smaller folds inside it.

We can find synclines in many places. The Powder River Basin is in Wyoming. In Maryland, you can see them at Sideling Hill. There is the Forêt de Saou syncline in France. You can find the Southland Syncline in New Zealand.

Other examples include the Strathmore Syncline in Scotland. You can also see them in South Africa at Table Mountain. The Hondo Syncline is in New Mexico.

Think about a thick rug on a floor. If you push both ends, it bends. The middle part dips down. That dip is like a syncline.

The layers of the rug are like rock layers. The way they fold tells a story. It tells a story of great pressure. It shows how the Earth builds itself up. You can see these shapes in nature today.
