Anticline

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

An anticline is a special kind of fold in the Earth's rock layers. It forms a shape like an arch or a hill. This shape is very important to scientists who study the ground.

You can tell an anticline apart from other folds by looking at the age of the rocks. In an anticline, the oldest rock layers are found at the very center. The youngest layers are on the outside of the arch.

If we do not know the age of the rocks, we call the shape an antiform instead.

An anticline has several specific parts that help us describe it. The highest point of the curve is called the hinge or the crest.

The sides of the fold that slope away from the center are called limbs. There is also an imaginary flat surface called the axial plane. This plane connects the hinge of every layer through the middle of the fold. If both sides of the fold look the same, it is a symmetrical anticline. If one side is different, it is an asymmetrical anticline. Some folds are "tight" with small angles, while others are "open" with large angles.

These folds happen because of huge movements deep inside the Earth. Most anticlines grow above thrust faults. A thrust fault is a crack where rock layers are pushed over one another. As tectonic plates move, they create pressure that warps the rock layers. You can imagine bending a deck of cards to see how layers slip. This is called a flexural-slip fold. Sometimes, the rock is so soft that it flows like warm plastic. This is called a passive-flow fold and often happens in very hot areas.

Anticlines are very helpful for finding resources like oil and natural gas. About 80 percent of the world's petroleum is found in these types of traps. Because oil is light, it moves upward through the rock. It gets stuck under a hard layer called a caprock. This caprock acts like a lid to keep the oil in place.

People also find amazing fossils in these folds. These fossils help researchers learn about life from long ago.

There are many famous anticlines around the world. In Saudi Arabia, the Ghawar Anticline holds the largest oil field on Earth. In Kansas, the El Dorado anticline produced 300 million barrels of oil by 1995. The Ventura Anticline in California is also very large and active. It rises at a rate of 5 millimeters every year.

In New Mexico, the Tierra Amarilla anticline is a great place for hiking. It has beautiful rocks and fossils from the Jurassic period.
