Rocks in the Earth can bend into an arch shape. We call this shape an anticline.

An anticline has several main parts. The highest point is called the hinge. This is also known as the crest. The sides of the fold are called limbs.

You can tell an anticline from other folds by looking at the rock layers. The oldest rock layers are in the center. The youngest layers are on the outside.

How do these folds form? Often, they happen above a thrust fault. A fault is a crack where rocks move. Pressure from moving plates can push the rocks up. Sometimes the rock is very soft. It can flow like thick plastic. This is called a passive-flow fold.

Anticlines are very useful to people. They act like a trap for oil and natural gas. The oil moves upward through the rock. It gets stuck under a hard layer called a caprock. This layer stops the oil from moving further. About 80 percent of the world's oil is found in these traps. People also find fossils in these rock folds.
