Farrell danced for many years. She even danced in Brussels, Belgium. Later, she moved back to the United States. She worked with Balanchine until he died in 1983. She retired from dancing in 1989. This was because of arthritis in her hip. Arthritis is a condition that can cause pain in joints.

After she stopped dancing, she became a teacher. She taught at Florida State University. She also started her own group called the Suzanne Farrell Ballet. This group performed at the Kennedy Center.
