geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sutherland Falls is a very tall waterfall. It is in New Zealand. You can find it on the South Island. It sits near a place called Milford Sound. The falls are southwest of Chao Pass.

The water starts at Lake Quill. It falls down in three parts. These parts are called cascades. The first part is 229 meters tall. The middle part is 248 meters tall. The last part is 103 meters tall. All together, the falls are 580 meters tall. This makes them the tallest waterfall in New Zealand.

A man named Donald Sutherland saw them in 1880. He was a settler from Scotland. He thought they were even taller than they are. Later studies showed the true height.

Lake Quill got its name from an explorer. He climbed the cliff to find the lake in 1890. You can walk to the bottom of the falls. It is a 90-minute walk from a shelter. The falls even appeared in a movie called The Hobbit.
