Surprise is a very fast feeling.

It happens when reality is different from what you expected. This gap between what you thought would happen and what actually happens causes surprise. It can be a good thing, like a birthday party. It can also be a bad thing, like a parking ticket.

Your body has a quick way to react to surprise. This is called a startle response. It helps you stop what you are doing to look at something new. Your muscles, like those in your neck, may feel tight. If the surprise feels like a threat, your body may use a fight-or-flight response. This lets out adrenaline, which gives you power to run or fight.

You can see surprise on a person's face. Their eyebrows often go up high. Their eyelids open wide. Their jaw may drop down.

Sometimes, your pupils, the black circles in your eyes, will change size. This happens very quickly. If you see the same surprise many times, it might not feel as strong. This is because you begin to expect it.
