Surakarta has a history that goes back a very long time. Evidence shows people lived in this region one million years ago. A famous skeleton known as "Solo Man" was found nearby. Long ago, the area was part of the Mataram kingdom. A village called Wulayu existed there in A.D. 904. By the 18th century, the village was called Sala. This name came from the sala tree. The Dutch found the name hard to say. Because of this, the name changed to Solo.

In 1745, Surakarta became the new capital for the Mataram Sultanate. The city was ruled by kings called Susuhunan. During colonial times, the kingdom was split into two parts. One part was the Surakarta Sunanate. The other was the Yogyakarta Sultanate. Because the Dutch were in control, people focused on arts. They developed traditional music called gamelan to show their culture. One famous ruler was Pakubuwono X. He was very popular and had a huge funeral.
