It sits right along the western bank of the Indus River. The city is located directly across the water from the historic city of Rohri. Because of the hills near the river, this area is sometimes called the "Sukkur Gorge." These hills have acted as a natural boundary for the Sindh region for a long time. Sukkur is a very important place for trade and farming in the area.

This massive structure is made of yellow stone and steel. It is part of one of the largest irrigation projects in the whole world. The barrage uses seven large canals to send water to nearly 10 million acres of farmland. This helps farmers grow many different things like rice, cotton, wheat, and melons.

People have lived in this region for thousands of years. Long ago, the Indus Valley Civilization lived near here. You can still find ruins from that time at a place called Lakhan-jo-daro. This ancient site is very large and is thought to be the second largest city of that old civilization. The modern city we see today began to grow in the 1840s. A military camp was set up there in 1839, which helped the area develop.
