In the past, cables used copper wires. Today, they use optical fiber. This is a set of tiny glass threads. These threads carry digital data across the sea. Modern cables are thin in the deep ocean. They are much larger and heavier in shallow water near the shore.

People first used these cables for telegraphs. A telegraph sends quick messages using electricity. The first successful transatlantic cable worked in 1858. This linked two different continents for the first time. By 1872, cables linked almost every continent. Only Antarctica was left without a link.

Special ships lay these cables on the seabed. These ships are called cable layers. They work in both deep and shallow water. The cables must be strong. They must also stay safe from rocks and storms.
