A scientist named Roger C. Wood first named the genus in 1976. He used a large piece of a shell to name it. These fossils were found during excavations in Venezuela in 1972. Later, in 2006, a second species called Stupendemys souzai was described. More fossils were found in the Colombian Tatacoa Desert in 2021. These new finds included the first real skull remains of the turtle.

The skull was roughly triangular in shape. It had a wide mouth that allowed the turtle to be a generalist feeder. This means it could eat many different things. Juvenile or early adult specimens had carapaces that were relatively tall. As the turtles grew into adults, their shells became much flatter. The front margin of the shell also developed a deep notch. This notch was flanked by large, bony horns in male specimens. These horns were deeply grooved, which suggests they were covered by a keratinous sheath. This sheath is the same hard material found in human fingernails.

Scientists have used various fossils to reconstruct the biology of these giants. The skull of Stupendemys was roughly triangular when viewed from above.

The skull featured large prefrontal bones that created a vertical wall above the nostrils. Based on skull analysis from 2021, researchers believe Stupendemys was a generalist feeder. This means it had a very diverse diet. It likely consumed fish, snakes, and small crocodilians. It may also have eaten hard-shelled molluscs. Some evidence suggests they were megafaunal frugivores, meaning they ate large amounts of fruit. This role would have helped them act as seed dispersers in their environment.

The history of discovering Stupendemys involves many decades of paleontological work. Roger C. Wood first named the genus in 1976. He based his naming on a large carapace specimen found in Venezuela. These fossils were originally unearthed during a 1972 excavation by Harvard University. In 2006, a second species, Stupendemys souzai, was described from fossils in Brazil. In 2021, new fossils were found in the Colombian Tatacoa Desert. These finds provided the first definitive skull remains and juvenile specimens.

These discoveries helped scientists correct the scientific name to Stupendemys geographica.

The scale of Stupendemys is truly impressive when looking at the numbers. The largest known specimen, CIAAP-2002-01, had a carapace length of 2.86 meters. This makes it larger than Archelon, a famous Cretaceous sea turtle that reached 2.20 meters. Estimating the weight of such a large animal is complex. One calculation based on shell length placed the weight at 871 kg. However, a more precise method using average measurements suggests a mass of 1,145 kg. Such massive size may have been driven by predators, habitat size, or favorable climates.

There is also evidence of interesting social behaviors among these turtles. Because only males possessed large horns, scientists believe these were sexually dimorphic traits. This means the horns were used to distinguish males from females. Researchers hypothesize the horns were used for intraspecific combat, or fighting between members of the same species. This is similar to how modern snapping turtles fight for territory. Evidence for this includes a deep scar found on a horn of the CIAAP-2002-01 specimen. This scar may have been caused by the horn of a rival male.

This ecosystem covered much of northern South America. Two giant turtle species lived there: Stupendemys and Caninemys. Although they were both huge, they avoided direct competition through different feeding strategies. Caninemys likely used a vacuum feeding method, while Stupendemys was a generalist. This follows Gause's Law, which states that species competing for the same niche cannot coexist long-term. The vast size of the wetlands also provided enough space for both species to thrive.
