Titanoboa was much larger than any snake alive today. It could grow to be about 12.8 meters long. It might also weigh as much as 1,135 kilograms. These estimates come from studying its thick, wide vertebrae. These bones are the parts of the spine that support the body. Its bones were very robust to hold up its heavy weight. It even beat the previous record holder, a snake named Gigantophis garstini.

Titanoboa cerrejonensis was a massive genus of extinct boid snake. This group of snakes includes modern boas and anacondas. Titanoboa lived during the middle and late Paleocene epoch. This period occurred roughly 60 to 58 million years ago. That was shortly after the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. This event ended the reign of nonavian dinosaurs. Titanoboa became one of the largest reptiles to live in the aftermath. It was a dominant presence in its ancient ecosystem.

Its diet consisted primarily of fish. Researchers found evidence of this in its skull anatomy. The skull had a high number of palatal and marginal teeth. It also had a specific bone structure in the palate. These features helped it hunt in the water. It likely fed on lungfish and other fish found in the Cerrejón Formation.

The physical structure of Titanoboa was quite unique. Its vertebrae were very robust and wide. When viewed from the front, they had a pentagonal shape. The neural spine, which is a bony projection, was T-shaped. This spine had a thin, blade-like front part. It also had an expanded back margin. The bones had much smaller foramina than other boids. Foramina are small pits found in the bone. These specific traits helped scientists identify it as a new species.

Finding these fossils was a long and complex process. An expedition began in 2002 in Colombia. Members of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the University of Florida worked there. They searched the Cerrejón coal mines in the La Guajira department. They eventually recovered 186 fossils from 30 different individuals. For a while, the fossils were mistakenly labeled as crocodilian remains. An international team led by Jason J. Head finally described them in 2009. They named the species Titanoboa cerrejonensis. The name comes from the Greek word "Titan" and the Cerrejón region.

Titanoboa was incredibly large compared to modern snakes. Estimates suggest it grew to about 12.8 meters in length. It may have weighed around 1,135 kilograms. Scientists calculated this by studying its large vertebrae. In modern constrictors, size comes from larger bones rather than more bones. This allowed researchers to estimate total body size from single specimens. Titanoboa surpassed the previous record holder, Gigantophis garstini. It also significantly exceeded the size of the green anaconda.

The environment of the Paleocene played a huge role in its size. The region was a coastal plain with wet, tropical forests. Large river systems moved through these forests. The climate was a warm and humid greenhouse climate. Titanoboa was a poikilothermic ectotherm. This means its internal temperature depended on the environment. Warmth helped its metabolism and allowed it to grow so large. Scientists estimate the mean annual temperature was at least 30 degrees Celsius. This heat was much higher than most modern tropical forests.

Titanoboa belongs to the family Boidae and the subfamily Boinae. Most living boines are found in the Americas. However, Titanoboa's skull suggests links to other lineages. It may be related to boids from Madagascar and the Pacific Islands. This suggests these groups diverged by the Paleocene at the latest. The snake lived alongside many other ancient reptiles. These included various turtles and several types of crocodylomorphs. Studying Titanoboa helps us see how climate and extinction shape life. It shows how a changing world creates new giants.
