Stream of consciousness

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever wondered how your thoughts flow? They do not always move in a straight line. They jump from one idea to another. This is how the mind works. Writers use a special way to show this. They call it stream of consciousness.

This method tries to show many thoughts and feelings at once. It can look messy. A writer might use very little punctuation. This means they use few dots or commas. It makes the writing feel like a real river of ideas. Some people call this an interior monologue. That is a way to show a character's inner voice. Some say the two terms are the same. Others say they are a bit different.

Many famous writers used this style. James Joyce was a big part of this movement. His book Ulysses is a great example.

Other writers like Virginia Woolf and Dorothy Richardson used it too. Dorothy Richardson wrote the first full book like this in English. The term itself comes from a man named William James. He said thoughts are not broken into bits. He said they flow like a stream. Today, people use this style in poems and songs. They even use it in films.
