These hats are designed to shade the head and face from direct sunlight. People also use them for fashion or as part of a uniform. Because they are made from natural materials, they feel very different depending on the plant used. Many people around the world find them useful for staying cool in the summer. They are a practical tool and a beautiful piece of art.

Making a straw hat is a careful process of weaving.

Most hats are made by weaving different types of plant fibers together. To shape them, makers often use steam or soak the straw in hot water. This makes the material soft enough to mold by hand or over a wooden block. A tighter weave often makes a hat look more consistent and expensive. Because larger hats take much more time to weave, they usually cost more money.

Straw hats have a very long history in many lands.

People in Africa and Asia have worn them since after the Middle Ages. In the West, spectacular straw hats appeared in famous paintings from the 1400s. In the 1800s, straw bonnets became a big business in the United States. A woman named Betsey Metcalf Baker taught others how to braid straw. This helped working-class women earn money by making hats at home.

There are many special kinds of straw hats from different places.

In Ecuador, people make fine Panama hats from Toquilla straw. The Zenú people of Colombia make the Sombrero vueltiao with intricate patterns. In the Philippines, you might see a Buntal hat or a pointed Salakot. The mokorotlo hat is even a national symbol for the people of Lesotho. Even President Theodore Roosevelt helped make the straw fedora popular in 1906.

Today, you can see straw hats in many different parts of life. The Old Order Amish in the United States wear them during the summer. They switch to felt hats when the weather turns cold. You can find simple versions made from rush grass or even paper. Some hats use modern materials like plastic or silk to look a certain way. Whether for a farmer or for fashion, these hats connect us to nature.
