Cars race on oval tracks or road courses. This sport started in the southern United States. Long ago, moonshine runners used fast cars. They had to outrun the law. They made their cars look normal. This helped them not get caught. Later, they began to race each other.

In 1948, Bill France Sr. started NASCAR. This group made rules for the races. At first, cars had to be "stock." This meant they used parts from real cars. Drivers even drove their race cars to the track!

As time went on, cars became much faster. Makers built special cars to win races. Some cars had new shapes to help them move through the air. These were called aero-cars.

Today, stock cars are different. They are built just for racing. They do not look like cars you can buy. They have very powerful V8 engines. These engines can make up to 900 hp. People all over the world love to watch them race.
