Stiffness

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Have you ever tried to bend a metal rod? It might be very hard. This is because the rod has stiffness. Stiffness is how much an object resists change when you push it.

If an object is easy to bend, we call it flexible. Flexibility is the opposite of stiffness. You can even make a spring with stiffness that changes as you pull it.

Scientists use math to measure stiffness. They look at the force used and how much the object moves. In science, we use the term displacement. This means the change in length or position.

Stiffness is not the same as elasticity. Elasticity is a property of the material itself. Stiffness is a property of the whole object. The shape and size of an object change its stiffness.

Stiffness is important in many ways. Engineers look for high stiffness when they do not want things to bend. In biology, stiffness helps cells move. Your skin also uses stiffness to keep its shape. A protein called collagen helps your skin stay firm.
