Stiffness

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Stiffness is how much an object resists changing its shape. When you push or pull on something, it might bend or stretch. A stiff object makes it very hard to change its shape. The opposite of stiffness is flexibility or pliability. This means the object is easy to bend or stretch.

Scientists also use the word compliance to describe this. Compliance is just the opposite of stiffness. If an object is very flexible, it has high compliance. Understanding stiffness helps us know how objects will act under pressure.

We can measure stiffness by looking at how much an object moves. This movement is called displacement. To find the stiffness, you divide the force by the displacement. For example, you can measure how much a spring stretches.

You can also measure rotational stiffness. This happens when you twist an object, like a metal bar. The twist is measured by an angle. In the International System of Units, stiffness uses newtons per meter. In Imperial units, it uses pounds per inch.

Stiffness is different from a property called the elastic modulus. The elastic modulus belongs to the material itself. Stiffness belongs to the whole object or structure. This means the shape and size of an object change its stiffness. A long, thin rod will be different from a short, thick one. Even if they are made of the same metal, their stiffness changes. For a part under tension, stiffness depends on the area and length. Engineers must consider both the material and the shape.

Stiffness is very important in many different jobs. Engineers look for high stiffness when they want to stop bending. They look for low stiffness when they need flexibility. In biology, stiffness helps cells move in a way called durotaxis. This is how cells find their way around. Stiffness is also a big part of how our skin works. A protein called collagen helps skin keep its shape. Collagen makes up about 75% of the dry weight of skin.

Doctors can study skin stiffness to help patients. When skin is injured, it might form a scar. A scar can change how flexible the skin is. One tool used to measure this is called a Cutometer.

This device uses a vacuum to pull on the skin. It measures how much the skin stretches vertically. This helps doctors tell the difference between healthy skin and scars. They can even see if a treatment is working. This helps people heal from traumatic injuries more effectively.
