Stieg Larsson was a famous Swedish writer and journalist. He is best known for creating the Millennium series of crime novels. These books tell exciting stories that many people around the world love to read. By March 2015, his series had sold 80 million copies worldwide.

His stories were even made into movies in Sweden and the United States. One of his most famous books is called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. This book helped him become a very successful author.

Larsson's writing journey started with a special gift. On his 12th birthday, his parents gave him a typewriter. He began by writing science fiction stories for fans. He even helped run science fiction clubs and magazines called fanzines.

Later, he moved into journalism and worked as a graphic designer. He also spent time as a researcher. He studied groups that held extreme views to help keep people safe. This work was very important to his beliefs.

Larsson grew up in a snowy part of northern Sweden. He lived in a small wooden house in the countryside. He remembered fondly using cross-country skis to travel to school in the winter.

He later moved to the big city of Stockholm. During his youth, he also served in the Swedish Army. He spent 16 months training as a mortarman. These different experiences helped shape the settings in his famous novels.

Larsson's life was filled with many specific details and dates. He was born in Skelleftehamn on August 15, 1954. He passed away from a sudden heart attack on November 9, 2004.

At the time of his death, he had finished three books in his main series. These were published after he died, starting in 2005. Because he wanted to write ten books, other authors like David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnoff were asked to continue the series. They have written many more books for fans to enjoy.

Many of the ideas in his books come from things he already knew. He was a feminist, which means he believed men and women should be equal. He used his stories to talk about how women are treated in society.

He was also inspired by famous Swedish children's author Astrid Lindgren. For example, his character Lisbeth Salander was partly based on the character Pippi Longstocking. He even used names from other books to connect his stories to the world of literature. His work remains a big part of modern storytelling.
