Wynn's way of working involves planning and building very expensive resorts. He often uses special designs to make them feel special. For example, The Mirage was the first casino to use security cameras on all table games all the time. The Bellagio is another famous project with a large, man-made lake. This lake has fountains that dance to music.
Steve Wynn was born Stephen Alan Weinberg on January 27, 1942. He grew up in Connecticut and later lived in New York.
His career started in the gambling industry with bingo parlors. In 1967, he moved to Las Vegas to work at the Frontier Hotel. By 1973, he was the youngest casino owner in Las Vegas.
Wynn has built many different types of large resorts. He opened Wynn Las Vegas in 2005 for $2.7 billion.
Stephen Alan Wynn is a prominent American real estate developer and art collector. He is best known for his massive influence on the luxury casino and hotel industries.
Wynn's business model focused on creating high-end, opulent destinations. One of his most significant early projects was The Mirage, which opened on the Las Vegas Strip in 1989. This project cost $630 million and was financed largely through high-yield bonds. The Mirage was notable for being the first casino to use security cameras full-time on all table games.

The development of Wynn's empire occurred in several distinct stages. His early career involved managing the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. In 1973, he became the youngest majority shareholder of the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas. He later moved into large-scale resort development with Mirage Resorts. In 2000, he sold Mirage Resorts to MGM Grand Inc., which formed MGM Mirage. Following this, he took his new company, Wynn Resorts, public in 2002. This allowed him to launch even larger projects like Wynn Las Vegas and various resorts in Macau.
Wynn's personal history significantly shaped his early professional life. He was born Stephen Alan Weinberg on January 27, 1942, in New Haven, Connecticut. His father, Michael, owned a chain of bingo parlors in the eastern United States. In 1946, when Steve was four years old, his father changed the family name to Wynn. This change was made to avoid anti-Jewish discrimination. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963, Wynn faced a major life shift. His father died during heart surgery, leaving behind $350,000 in gambling debts. Instead of attending Yale Law School, Wynn took over the family's bingo parlor in Maryland.
His rise in the gambling industry was marked by strategic land deals and partnerships. In 1967, he moved to Las Vegas and purchased a small stake in the Frontier Hotel and Casino. He met E. Parry Thomas, the president of the Bank of Las Vegas, who helped finance his early deals. By 1980, Wynn was expanding to the East Coast with the Golden Nugget Atlantic City. This was the first and only "locals casino" in Atlantic City at the time. Although it was the second smallest casino in the city when it opened, it became the top earning casino by 1983. Wynn eventually sold the Atlantic City property in 1987 for $440 million.
Wynn's later years were defined by massive construction projects and international expansion. He opened Wynn Las Vegas in 2005 at a cost of $2.7 billion. This was the largest privately funded construction project in the United States at that time. He also expanded into Asia, opening Wynn Macau in 2006 and Wynn Palace in Macau in 2016. In the United States, he opened Encore Las Vegas in 2008. He also oversaw the development of Encore Boston Harbor, which opened in June 2019.
Despite his professional success, Wynn's career faced significant challenges in 2018. In February of that year, he announced his resignation as CEO of Wynn Resorts. This followed reports of sexual misconduct allegations, which Wynn has denied. These events occurred while he was also serving as the finance chair of the Republican National Committee. Before these controversies, Wynn was a prominent donor to the Republican Party. His net worth has seen massive fluctuations throughout his career. By 2004, he had become a billionaire. As of April 2025, Forbes estimated his net worth at $3.7 billion.
