I. M. Pei was a renowned Chinese-American architect who shaped the modern world through his designs. An architect is a professional who plans, sketches, and manages the construction of buildings.
Pei's design philosophy was shaped by his early life in China and his education in America. As a child, he visited the garden villas of Suzhou. He loved the Shizilin Garden, where man-made structures blended with nature. This balance became a core part of his later work. Later, in Shanghai, he saw the Bund waterfront.
His path to professional architecture was a journey of constant learning and adaptation. In 1935, he moved to the United States to study. He first enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. He found their focus on the Beaux-Arts style, which mimics ancient Greek and Roman traditions, uninspiring. He transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study engineering.
Pei eventually moved to the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD). There, he studied under Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. Both men were leaders of the Bauhaus, a famous European architectural movement. This environment encouraged him to push the boundaries of modern design. During World War II, Pei briefly paused his architectural studies. He worked for the National Defense Research Committee.
After the war, Pei began building his professional reputation through various firms. In 1948, he worked for a New York real estate developer. In 1955, he founded his own firm, I. M. Pei & Associates. However, he continued to work as a consultant for his sons' firm, Pei Partnership Architects.
