He is widely considered the premier Test batsman of his generation. A Test batsman is a player who specializes in the longest, most traditional format of cricket. Smith has achieved an incredible milestone by scoring over 10,000 Test runs. His skill is reflected in his ICC Test batting rating of 947. This figure is the second-highest ever recorded in the history of the sport. Only the legendary Don Bradman holds a higher rating of 961. Because of his consistent excellence, Smith was named the ICC Men's Test Player of the Decade for the period between 2011 and 2020.

Smith's role on the field has evolved significantly throughout his career. Initially, he was selected for the Australian national team as a leg-spinning all-rounder. An all-rounder is a player who excels at both batting and bowling. Specifically, he used leg-spin, a type of bowling that uses finger and wrist movements to make the ball turn. During his early years, he even received mentoring from the famous bowler Shane Warne. However, his immense talent with the bat led him to focus on batting almost exclusively. In Test cricket, he typically occupies the number 4 position in the batting order. In One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20Is, he more frequently bats at number 3.

His journey began in Kogarah, a suburb in Southern Sydney, where he was born on 2 June 1989. Smith attended Menai High School before moving to England at age 17 to pursue cricket. While in England, he played for Sevenoaks Vine in the Kent Cricket League. This experience helped him earn a spot on the Surrey County second XI. In 2008, he represented Australia at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia. He made his first-class debut for New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2008. His domestic career with New South Wales has been marked by many high scores and leadership roles. He has often led the state team to significant victories in various domestic competitions.

Smith's career has included both immense triumph and significant challenges. In March 2018, during a Test match against South Africa, he was involved in a ball-tampering incident. This event led to widespread criticism and Smith stepping down from his role as Australian captain. Following an investigation by Cricket Australia, he received a one-year ban from all Australian international and domestic cricket. He was also barred from any leadership positions for an additional year. Despite this difficult period, Smith successfully returned to the sport. He rejoined the Australian leadership in November 2021 as the Test vice-captain. He eventually resumed captaincy duties during various matches, including the 2021–22 Ashes series.

His leadership has resulted in many successful campaigns for the Australian national team. Smith has been a vital member of several championship-winning squads. He was part of the teams that won the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He also contributed to the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup victory. As a leader, he guided the team to a Test victory in India, which was Australia's only win there since 2017. He also served as the vice-captain for the team that won the 2021–23 ICC World Test Championship. Smith officially retired from ODI cricket on 5 March 2025, after captaining his final match.

He also earned the ICC Test Player of the Year title in both 2015 and 2017. In Australia, he has won the Allan Border Medal four times, specifically in 2015, 2018, 2021, and 2023. This medal is given to the best player in Australian cricket. Additionally, he was named an Australian Test Player of the Year in 2015 and 2018. He also secured the Australian One Day International Player of the Year award in 2015 and 2021.

Beyond his individual accolades, Smith's career connects him to the broader history of the game. His batting statistics place him among the greatest players to ever play cricket. For example, his 58.09 average in One-Day domestic competitions is the second-highest of all time for players with at least 500 runs. This places him only behind Michael Bevans, who holds an average of 61.18. His ability to perform across different formats, from the fast-paced T20s to the long Test matches, demonstrates his versatility. Whether leading a team as captain or performing as a specialist batsman, Smith has remained a central figure in international cricket for over a decade.
