Dale Willem Steyn is a former professional cricketer from South Africa. He is widely considered the greatest fast bowler of the modern era. Many experts also rank him among the greatest fast bowlers of all time. His playing style relied on a rare and lethal combination of skills. He could produce high pace alongside late swing. Late swing occurs when the ball moves through the air just before it reaches the batter. This combination made his deliveries nearly unplayable for many legendary players.

Steyn's career began in the small town of Phalaborwa. He was born there in 1983 near the Kruger National Park. His family roots are in Zimbabwe. He made his first-class debut for Northerns in October 2003. His early international appearances were quite difficult. In his first Test against England in 2004, he struggled with consistency. He even bowled eight no-balls in nine overs during a match in January 2005. However, he improved significantly after working with bowling coach Ian Pont. He eventually became a mainstay of the South African national team.

His success was built on specific, devastating performances. During a series against New Zealand, he achieved his first ten-wicket match. He took five wickets for 35 runs and five wickets for 59 runs in one game. This performance helped South Africa win by 358 runs. This was the team's biggest victory margin in terms of runs. He also earned his first Man-of-the-Match award during this series. Steyn's ability to rip through batting lineups became his trademark. He was able to maintain this intensity across different formats of the game.

Steyn achieved remarkable statistics during his peak years. In the 2007–08 season, he took 78 wickets with an average of 16.24. This performance earned him the ICC 2008 Test Cricketer of the Year Award. He held the number one spot in the ICC Test rankings for a record 263 weeks. This is a much longer duration than Muttiah Muralitharan, who held it for 214 weeks. As of October 2016, Steyn had spent 2,356 days at the top of the rankings. In December 2018, he became South Africa's leading wicket taker in Test cricket. He surpassed the record previously held by Shaun Pollock.

Beyond international matches, Steyn was a major figure in franchise cricket. He played in the Indian Premier League for several teams. He joined Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2008 for US$325,000. Later, the Deccan Chargers bought him for $1.2 million for the 2011 season. He also played for the Gujarat Lions, where he was bought for ₹ 22.3 million. Steyn competed in various global leagues, including the Big Bash in Australia. He also played for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League. These tournaments allowed him to showcase his skills to global audiences.

Physical challenges eventually altered the course of his career. In December 2015, he suffered a shoulder injury during a Test against England in Durban. This injury led to multiple subsequent injuries. Many experts noted that he was no longer the same player after 2015. The batsmen no longer feared him as they had in his prime. Despite these struggles, he remained an important figure in the sport. He was named to the ICC Test Team of the Decade at the end of 2020. He was also recognized as a Wisden Cricketer of the Decade in 2019.

Steyn's impact on cricket is reflected in many honors. He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2013. He was also named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World in 2014. Former South African player Allan Donald called his pace attack the best the country ever produced. This attack included Steyn, Vernon Philander, and Morne Morkel. Steyn eventually retired from Test cricket in August 2019. He retired from all forms of cricket on August 31, 2021. His legacy remains tied to his incredible speed and skill.
