How do we know about stars? We can study their light.

Scientists use a tool to split light into a rainbow. This is called a spectrum. This rainbow has dark lines in it.

These lines show which chemicals are in the star. The lines also show how hot the star is.

Most stars use the MK system for naming. This system uses letters to show temperature. The letter O is for the hottest stars. The letter M is for the coolest stars.

We can also use numbers to be more exact. A zero is hotter than a nine.

We also look at how bright a star is. This is called luminosity. Scientists use Roman numerals to show this. A big star might be a giant. A small star might be a dwarf. The Sun is a main-sequence star. That means it is a normal star. Its code is G2V. This tells us its temperature and its size.
