Steganography

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Steganography is a way to hide secrets. It is not just about locking a message. It is about hiding the fact that a message even exists.

This is different from cryptography. Cryptography protects the words in a message. Steganography hides the whole message inside something else. The secret might be inside a picture, a song, or a video.

People have used this for a very long time. In ancient Greece, one man shaved a message onto a servant's head. He waited for the hair to grow back before sending him. Another person wrote a secret on a wooden tablet. Then, they covered it with wax to hide the writing.

Today, we use computers for this. A person can hide a message in a digital image. They might change the color of every hundredth pixel. This change is so small that most people will not see it.

Some printers even use tiny yellow dots to hide data. These dots are too small for the human eye to see. This helps the printer track its own information.
