Steganography

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Steganography is a clever way to hide secret information. It is different from cryptography, which only protects the words in a message. Steganography hides the fact that a secret message is even being sent. The secret is tucked inside something else, like a picture or a song. This makes the message look like a normal object. It might look like a simple shopping list or a photo. Because the secret is hidden so well, people might not even look for it.

There are many ways this works in the real world. In the past, people used physical objects to hide things. They might use invisible ink on a piece of paper. Someone could even hide a message in the pattern of a piece of yarn. Today, we use digital steganography with computer files. A person can hide a message inside a digital image file. They might change the color of every hundredth pixel slightly. This change is so small that most people will not notice it.

People have used these tricks for a very long time. We can find records of this dating back to 440 BC in Greece. One man named Histiaeus shaved a message onto a servant's head. He waited for the hair to grow back before sending him on his way. Another man named Demaratus wrote a message on the wood of a tablet. He then covered it with a layer of wax to hide it.

In 1499, Johannes Trithemius wrote a famous book called Steganographia. He wrote it as a book about magic to hide its true purpose. He even created a way to hide words inside a Latin prayer. The word steganography itself comes from two Greek words. One part means "covered or concealed" and the other means "writing." This describes exactly what the practice does for the user.

Modern technology has created even more complex ways to hide data. Some digital files use tiny changes in sound or video. Even some laser printers use a special method to track information. They print tiny yellow dots that are too small for your eyes to see. These dots include the printer's serial number and the time. This shows how steganography has moved from shaved heads to high-tech machines.
