His career is defined by a high level of creativity and a tendency to invent new formats. He has transitioned between being a performer on screen and a producer behind the scenes. Even after a period of retirement, he has returned to the television industry to create new programming.

Raab's approach to television often involves creating complex, multi-layered entertainment formats. One of his most successful creations is the game show Schlag den Raab, which translates to "Beat the Raab." In this competition, a single contestant faces Raab in a series of diverse disciplines. These episodes are known for their endurance, with some lasting more than five hours. He also developed several celebrity sports events that are produced on a regular basis. These include TV total Turmspringen, which is a high diving competition, and the TV total Stock Car Crash Challenge.

Beyond traditional television, Raab is credited with inventing entirely new types of competition. In November 2003, he initiated the first official World Wok racing Championship in Winterberg, Germany. This unique sport uses modified Chinese woks, which are large metal cooking pans, to make timed runs down an Olympic bobsled track. The championship continued annually until March 2011 in Innsbruck. He also created Autoball, a version of football played using cars and an exercise ball to score goals. These inventions demonstrate his ability to blend physical skill with unexpected, humorous concepts.

Raab's career path began with a very different foundation than his life in entertainment. He grew up in Cologne, where his parents operated a butcher shop. Before entering the media industry, he completed an apprenticeship as a butcher in that shop. He also pursued higher education by studying law at a university. However, he left his studies after completing five semesters. His professional media career gained significant momentum in 1993 when he began hosting the comedy show Vivasion on the VIVA music channel. By 1994, he achieved widespread fame after composing a hit single that spoofed national football coach Berti Vogts.

Music has played a central role in Raab's professional identity. He is an autodidact, meaning he is a self-taught musician. He plays various instruments, including the piano, drums, guitar, ukulele, and several wind instruments. In 1990, he began working as a freelance producer and composer for radio commercials and jingles. His musical output includes many popular songs and parodies. He has also been a major influence on Germany's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.

This involvement includes acting as a composer, mentor, and jury president for various national pre-selection shows.

Raab's influence on the Eurovision Song Contest is supported by significant competitive successes. In 2010, he served as the creator and jury president for the pre-selection show Unser Star für Oslo. This show helped determine the winner, Lena Meyer-Landrut, who went on to win the entire Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Satellite." This victory was the first for Germany in 28 years. He continued this work in 2011 by producing the winning song "Taken by a Stranger." In 2025, he returned to this role for the pre-selection competition Chefsache ESC 2025. This competition resulted in the group Abor & Tynna representing Germany, where they placed 15th.

Raab's work connects various fields, including sports, music, and political discourse. His late-night show, TV total, which aired on ProSieben starting in 1999, combined comedy with musical performances. He also stepped into serious political territory in 2012 with a new talk show designed to include political guests. This show placed him in direct competition with other major hosts like Günther Jauch. In September 2013, he participated as one of four hosts in a federal election debate between Angela Merkel and Peer Steinbrück. His career illustrates how a single individual can impact the cultural, musical, and even political landscape of a nation through diverse media formats.
