This method is very popular because it is a healthy way to prepare meals. It helps people avoid using extra fat like cooking oil. Steaming also keeps food moist and soft instead of drying it out. It is a very efficient way to cook. You use much less water than you would for boiling. The heat moves through the steam very well to reach the food.

How does the steaming process work? First, you boil water continuously until it turns into steam. This steam pushes all the air out of the way. The food stays separate from the boiling water below. Instead, the steam touches the food directly. As the steam hits the food, it turns back into water droplets. This is called condensation. This process helps create a very moist texture in your meal.

People have been steaming food for a very long time. Some of the oldest examples come from China's Yellow River Valley. Scientists found stone cookers there from 5,000 BCE. In the Stone Age, people in Japan also used steaming. In the Bronze Age, people in Italy and Sardinia used it too. In Cochise County, Arizona, people used steam pits 10,000 years ago. Since the eighth century, people have used thin strips of cypress wood for steamers.

There are many different tools used for steaming today. You might use a metal steamer made of aluminum or stainless steel. Many people also love using traditional bamboo steamers. These often have a chimney in the center to spread steam. The bamboo lid is special because it absorbs extra moisture. This helps keep delicate food from getting too wet. You can even use a wok with a metal frame to steam food.
