This pair is a very old sign. It has many different meanings.

In the past, people used it to show the sky. The star might be the sun or the planet Venus. The crescent is the moon. Some people think the star and moon show day and night.

In ancient times, people put these shapes on stone carvings and gold rings.

Kings also used the sign. A king named Mithridates used an eight-rayed star.

He used it as a royal mark for his land. Later, the Ottoman Empire used the star and crescent. It became a famous symbol for them. This helped the sign become a symbol for Islam. However, not all Muslims use it this way. Some say it is not a true sign of their faith.

Today, many countries use the sign on their flags. You can see it on the flag of Turkey. It is also on flags for Pakistan and Malaysia.
