Standardized test

society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A standardized test is an assessment administered and scored in a consistent manner. This means the questions and the rules for interpreting results are uniform for all test takers. Every person receives the same test under the same conditions. They are also evaluated using a predetermined, standard grading system.

This consistency allows for a reliable comparison of outcomes across different groups. Because the grading is not left to individual opinion, these tests are often perceived as more objective. They aim to measure specific skills rather than other variables that might change between people.

Standardized tests can take many different forms depending on what is being measured. They are not always written multiple-choice exams. Some are oral tests where a person speaks their answers. Others are practical tests that evaluate physical or hands-on skills.

For example, a driving test evaluates if a student follows specific standards while operating a vehicle. A music audition might require every musician to play the exact same piece of music.

Even medical professionals take practical standardized tests, such as performing CPR on a mannequin to prove they use the correct speed and pressure.

The definition of standardization has evolved over time. In 1960, the focus was on strict sameness of conditions and content for everyone. By the beginning of the 21st century, the focus shifted toward equal fairness. This led to the use of accommodations for people with disabilities. An accommodation is a change in testing conditions to improve fairness without changing the main point of the test. For instance, a student with a broken wrist might receive extra time to write. However, if a change alters the actual content of the test, it becomes a modification rather than a standardized test.

The history of these exams stretches back thousands of years to China. During the Han dynasty, the imperial examinations were used to select employees for the state bureaucracy. These exams covered the Six Arts, which included music, archery, horsemanship, arithmetic, writing, and ritual knowledge.

Over time, the subjects expanded to include military strategy, civil law, and agriculture. This institutionalized system lasted for more than a millennium. Today, China continues this tradition through the Gaokao system.

Standardized testing eventually spread to Europe and the Americas. In the 19th century, British colonial administrators like Thomas Taylor Meadows advocated for the system. British company managers used exams to ensure hiring and promotions were free from corruption or favoritism.

The Industrial Revolution helped spread these tests because compulsory education created more students. It became harder to use open-ended essays to assess large groups of people objectively. During World War II, the British Army used specialized boards to select candidates for officer training based on mental and mechanical abilities.

In the United States, standardized testing became a major phenomenon during the 20th century. The College Entrance Examination Board began offering tests for university admission in 1901. These early tests were often essays meant for elite schools. Later, the Army developed the Alpha and Beta tests during World War I to place recruits in roles based on intelligence. The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test appeared in 1916, and the SAT was designed in 1926.

The ACT was later introduced in 1959.

Today, large-scale testing is a significant part of the American education system. In 2012, 45 states spent an average of $27 per student, totaling $669 million, on annual academic tests.

These tests help the federal government compare performance across different states. Laws like the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 have shaped how these tests are used. While states still set their own curricula, these federal laws use standardized results to assess how well teachers are delivering that material. This system connects school performance to federal funding and national standards.
