society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A standardized test is a special kind of exam. It is given in a consistent way to every person. This means everyone takes the same test under the same rules. They are also graded using the same set of standards.

This makes it easier to compare how different people performed. Because the rules do not change, many people think these tests are fairer. They help show a person's true skills without being biased.

These tests can take many different forms. Some are written exams on paper. Others might be oral tests where you speak to a teacher. You can even have practical tests for physical skills.

For example, a driving test checks if you can follow road rules. A music audition might require everyone to play the same piece. Even medical tests like CPR use a standard way to check skills.

Standardized testing has a very long history. The earliest evidence comes from China during the Han dynasty.

These imperial examinations were used to pick workers for the government. They covered many subjects like music, math, and archery. Later, they added topics like law and agriculture. This system lasted for more than a thousand years. Today, China still uses a famous system called the Gaokao.

In the 1800s, these ideas moved toward Europe. British managers used exams to hire workers fairly. They wanted to stop favoritism and corruption in their business.

During World War II, the British Army used tests to pick officers. These tests looked at mental skills and how well people worked together. In the United States, the College Board created the SAT in 1926. Later, the ACT was offered for the first time in 1959.

Today, these tests are a big part of school life. In the United States, many states test students every year. This helps the government see how well schools are teaching. In 2012, 45 states spent about $669 million on these large tests.

Laws like the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 changed how schools use them. These tests help link what students learn to the money the government provides. They help leaders compare schools across the whole country.
