He worked in many places in Asia.

In 1811, he helped the British take control of Java. Java is a large island in Indonesia. He became a leader there for a few years. Raffles tried to change how land was managed. He also tried to limit the slave trade. He worked to study old monuments on the island. One of these was a temple called Borobudur.

He even wrote a book called The History of Java.

Later, Raffles helped establish a British presence in Singapore in 1819.

This helped ships trade between Europe and Asia. A man named William Farquhar helped run the city at first.

Many people remember Raffles today. A large flower called the Rafflesia was named after him.

Some people also debate his work. They say his actions as an imperialist were not always fair to local people.
