Stalagmites are rock shapes that grow on cave floors.

They form when water drips from a ceiling. As the water drips, it leaves minerals behind. These minerals pile up to make a shape. Most grow in limestone caves. They are made of calcium carbonate. This is a type of rock.

Stalagmites can also form in other ways.

Some grow from hot lava. These form in tubes made of lava. They grow very fast in just days or weeks. If they break, they will not grow back. Other shapes come from ice. These grow when a cave is below freezing. If the water keeps flowing, they can grow back.

Sometimes, these shapes grow on concrete. We call these calthemites. They happen when minerals move out of the concrete. They are usually small.

You should not touch stalagmites. Oils from your skin can change how they grow. Dirt can also change their color forever. In Vietnam, there is a very large stalagmite. It is in the Son Doong cave.
