Water drips from the ceiling. It leaves tiny bits of rock behind. These bits pile up to make a shape. These shapes are called stalagmites.

Most grow in limestone caves. They are made of rock from the water. Some can even be made of lava. These lava rocks grow very fast. They grow in just a few days.

Ice can also make these shapes. This happens when the cave is very cold. Water freezes on the floor. These ice rocks can grow back if it stays cold.

Do not touch these rocks. The oils on your skin can change them. They might even change color forever. It is best to just look at them.
