Staggered conformation

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Tiny parts of a molecule can move and twist.

Staggered Conformation
Staggered Conformation

They can twist around a single bond. One way they twist is called a staggered conformation. In this shape, the parts stay far apart. This happens when the parts are at a maximum distance. This shape is very stable. It is a low point for energy.

Eclipsed Conformation
Eclipsed Conformation

The opposite shape is called an eclipsed conformation. In this shape, the parts are very close. They are as close as they can be. This can happen in any open chain bond. Some molecules have special versions of these shapes. For example, n-butane has shapes called gauche and anti. These shapes also help build different crystals. Some crystals are made of boron nitride. Other crystals are like diamond or lonsdaleite. The way parts sit helps decide the crystal type.
