Scientists use a special drawing called a Newman projection.

This drawing helps us see the shape of a molecule. We look straight down a bond between two carbon atoms. The front atom is a dot. We call this the proximal atom. The back atom is a circle. We call this the distal atom.

Parts of a molecule can turn around a bond. This turning creates different shapes called conformations. You can draw up to six shapes for one bond. You make these shapes by turning the atoms 60 degrees. Some shapes are staggered. In these, the parts look spaced out. Other shapes are eclipsed. In these, the parts look like they sit on top of each other.

Eclipsed shapes have more bond strain. This means they have higher energy. Staggered shapes have less strain. Some staggered shapes have anti or gauche interactions. In an anti interaction, parts sit 180 degrees apart. In a gauche interaction, parts sit 60 degrees apart. Anti parts feel less strain than gauche parts. Melvin Spencer Newman made this way of drawing in 1952.
