Newman projection

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A Newman projection is a special drawing. It helps us see the 3D shape of a molecule.

This tool is very useful for looking at alkanes. Most people use it to look down a carbon-carbon bond. It shows how the parts of a molecule sit in space. This helps scientists understand the structure of tiny things.

This drawing works in a very specific way. You look straight down a chemical bond from front to back. The front atom is shown as a single dot. We call this the proximal atom. The back atom is shown as a large circle. This back atom is called the distal atom.

This style shows the angle between the two atoms clearly. It shows how the parts are lined up.

An American chemist named Melvin Spencer Newman created this method. He introduced it back in 1952.

He wanted a better way to show different shapes. Before this, people used Fischer projections. However, those could not show all the different shapes well. Newman's way was a great new replacement for them. It helps show how molecules can turn and shift.

Single bonds can rotate quite freely. This rotation creates different shapes called conformations.

You can draw up to six unique shapes for one bond. You make these by turning an atom 60 degrees. Three shapes are called staggered conformations. In these, the parts look spaced out from each other. The other three shapes are called eclipsed conformations. In these, the parts look like they sit on top of each other.

These shapes have different levels of energy. Eclipsed shapes have more bond strain. This means they have higher energy levels. Staggered shapes have less strain and lower energy.

Some staggered shapes have anti or gauche interactions. In an anti interaction, parts sit 180 degrees apart. In a gauche interaction, parts sit 60 degrees apart. Anti parts feel less strain than gauche parts. This helps us understand how molecules move.
