The movie follows a long and bumpy journey. The travelers ride from Tonto, Arizona, to Lordsburg, New Mexico. The group includes a doctor, a banker, and a man named Ringo the Kid. Ringo is running from the law after escaping from prison. Along the way, the passengers face many hard jobs and dangers. They must cross a river using logs to float the coach. They also have to deal with a sudden baby being born. The characters must work together to survive the long trip.

This film was based on a short story. The story was called "The Stage to Lordsburg." It was written by Ernest Haycox and published in 1937. The movie script was written by Dudley Nichols. Director John Ford wanted to make a very big movie. He even looked at a 1907 painting for ideas. The painting was called "Downing the Nigh Leader" by Frederic Remington. This helped him plan the exciting chase scenes in the film.

Making the movie was a very hard job for the crew. They stayed in a camp in Kayenta, Arizona. The weather there was very extreme with cold temperatures. Strong winds also blew throughout the filming. Most of the movie was shot in Monument Valley. This place is on the border of Arizona and Utah. Some scenes were also filmed at the Iverson Movie Ranch in California. These different locations make the landscape look very interesting.

Stagecoach changed how people saw Western movies. It helped make John Wayne a huge star. The film made a profit of $297,690 when it first came out. Famous director Orson Welles studied it like a school book. He watched it many times to learn filmmaking. However, the film has also faced criticism. Some people say it does not show Native Americans in a fair way. Even so, it remains a very famous part of movie history.
