Actors use it to perform for an audience. Many stages are raised platforms. This helps everyone see the action clearly.

One common type is the proscenium stage. It has a large opening called an arch. This arch acts like a picture frame. The audience sits on one side and looks in. This type of stage often has wings. Wings are side spaces used to hide props.

Another type is theatre in the round. Here, the stage is in the center. The audience sits on all four sides. This makes the show feel very close. A thrust stage is also popular. It sticks out into the crowd. People sit on three sides of it. Some stages are even made in parks or on streets.
