Spread (food)

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A spread is a soft food.

You use a knife to put it on bread. You can put it on crackers, too. Spreads make food taste better. They can also change how food feels. Some food may taste plain without a spread.

Many different foods can be spreads. Some come from milk. These are dairy spreads. They include butter and soft cheeses. Other spreads come from plants. Jams and jellies are plant spreads. You can also eat hummus. Some spreads are made from nuts. These include peanut butter and hazelnut butter. You can even find meat spreads like pâté.

Some people use spreads in a sandwich. These are called sandwich spreads. Examples are mustard and ketchup. They also use mayonnaise. This is not the same as a dip. You do not dip food into a spread. Instead, you spread it on top. You might use honey for a sweet taste. You might use Vegemite, which is a yeast spread. Spreads make many snacks very tasty.
