Spirit was a robotic explorer on the planet Mars.

It was part of a special NASA mission. This mission used two rovers to study the red planet. Spirit was also known by names like MER-A or MER-2. The name Spirit came from a contest for students. This rover helped scientists learn about the history of Mars. It was a very important tool for space science.

Spirit had a big job to do on the Martian surface.

It searched for clues about water from the past. Scientists wanted to find minerals that form in water. They looked for things like iron-bearing carbonates. The rover also studied rocks and soil to see how they changed. It helped check the work of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. This helped prove that tools used from space were working well.

Spirit began its journey on a rocket in 2003.

It launched on June 10, 2003, from Cape Canaveral. The rover landed safely in a crater called Gusev. This landing happened at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004. It landed three weeks before its twin, Opportunity. The landing site was named Columbia Memorial Station. This name honored seven astronauts from the Space Shuttle Columbia.

The rover was a very strong machine. It had six wheels and used a rocker-bogie system to move. This system helped it drive over rough ground. Spirit used solar arrays to catch energy from the sun. It also had lithium ion batteries to save power for the night. NASA only planned for a 90-sol mission. A sol is one day on Mars. Spirit ended up working for 2,208 sols. This was over twenty times longer than the original plan.

Things became difficult for Spirit in late 2009. It got stuck in soft sand at a place called Troy. The sand had very little grip for the wheels. This made it hard for the rover to recharge its batteries. Spirit stopped talking to Earth on March 22, 2010. Scientists think it became too cold to work. The mission was finally called complete on May 25, 2011. Spirit left behind a great record of the Martian world.
