The spectacled bear is a very special animal.

It lives in the Andes Mountains of South America. This bear is the only bear species living in that part of the world today. It is also the last living member of a group called short-faced bears. Most bears eat both meat and plants. However, the spectacled bear mostly eats plants. This way of eating is called a herbivorous diet. Because they are losing their forest homes, these bears are now called vulnerable.

These bears have very unique faces. Many have light beige or ginger markings on their chests and faces. These marks can look like a pair of glasses. This is how they got the name spectacled bear.

Some people call them Andean bears because of where they live. Every bear has a different pattern of marks. No two bears look exactly the same. The name "spectacled" comes from the Latin word for decorated. The name "Tremarctos" comes from Greek words meaning hole bear. This refers to a small hole found on their arm bone.

Scientists have studied how these bears are different from other bears. They are part of the Tremarctinae subfamily. These bears have shorter, taller skulls than most other bears. This makes their faces look shorter, but it is actually an illusion. Their eyes are also bigger and more rounded. They have larger teeth for grinding plants. Their chromosomes are also different. Most other bears have 74 chromosomes, but spectacled bears only have 52.

History shows that these bears have been around for a long time. Their ancestors first appeared in North America during the Miocene epoch. About 5.7 million years ago, they split from other bear groups. Long ago, other short-faced bears lived in North America too. One was called Tremarctos floridanus. That bear was much larger than the spectacled bear. It was about twice as big as the bears we see today.

Spectacled bears are also very different in size between males and females. This is called sexual dimorphism. Male bears are much larger than females. A male can weigh up to 300 kilograms. A female usually weighs about 150 kilograms. This means a male can be twice as heavy as a female. They live in high mountain forests. These forests are between 1,800 and 3,100 meters high.
