High mountains like Mt. Taygetus and Mt. Parnon acted as natural walls. These mountains helped protect the land from many invaders. The valley was a good place to live because the river provided fresh water.

People often called the whole area Lacedaemon.

Spartan life was very different from other Greek cities. A leader named Lycurgus is said to have created their laws.

The whole society was built around being strong soldiers. This was called a militarised system. The top group, the Spartiates, spent all their time on military training. They were even barred from doing other types of work. Boys went through a very hard training program called the agoge.

This training helped them become famous fighters in battle.

Society in Sparta was divided into very strict groups. The Spartiates were the citizens with full rights. Below them were the mothakes and perioikoi, who were free but had no citizenship. The largest group was the helots.

Helots were people owned by the state to work the land. Life was very hard and unfair for the helots. Because of this, they often tried to revolt against the Spartans.

Sparta was a major power for many centuries. Around 650 BC, they became one of the strongest military forces in Greece. They led the Greek military during the Greco-Persian Wars. Later, they fought a long war against the city of Athens.

Sparta won that war after the Battle of Aegospotami. However, their power began to fade after they lost to Thebes in 371 BC. This loss meant they could no longer control the region of Messenia.

Even after their power declined, people still talked about Sparta. The Romans later conquered Greece in 146 BC. During the Roman era, Sparta became a place where people went to visit.

It even became a place for tourists to see. Today, the modern town of Sparta is a provincial town in Greece. People still study the ancient ruins to learn about this unique way of life. Many people still feel a great fascination with the history of Sparta.
