Sparkling wine is a fizzy drink. It has many tiny bubbles.

These bubbles come from a gas called carbon dioxide. This gas stays inside the bottle under high pressure.

Some bottles have more pressure than a car tire!

Most sparkling wine is white or pink.

But some people make red sparkling wine too. Italy makes red wines like Lambrusco. Australia makes red wine from Shiraz grapes.

There are different ways to make the bubbles. In the champagne method, workers add sugar and yeast to a bottle. This starts a second fermentation. This process makes the gas inside the bottle.

Other wines use the Charmat method. This uses large steel tanks to make the bubbles. Some cheap wines just have gas added to them directly.

Many people call sparkling wine "champagne." But that name is special. By law, only wine from the Champagne region of France can use it. Other places have their own names. Italy has Prosecco. Spain has Cava. South Africa has Cap Classique.
