These animals are bred for specific traits. They are chosen for their strength and stamina. They also show a lot of energy and aggression. Most of these bulls live on huge, open estates. They roam free in places like the dehesas of Spain.

This way of life helps them keep their natural ways.

These bulls have a very athletic look. They have a large muscle group over their neck and shoulders. This is called a morrillo. This muscle helps them use their long horns with great strength. Mature bulls can weigh between 400 and 700 kg.

Many people think the color red makes them angry. This is actually a mistake. Bulls have dichromatic vision, which means they are red-green colorblind. They react to the movement of the cape instead of the color.

Raising these bulls follows a careful path. Calves spend their first year with their mothers. After they are weaned, they live in groups of the same sex. When they reach two years old, they undergo testing called the tienta. For males, this tests their aggression toward horses. It also shows how they use their horns.

If a bull is very brave, he might be indultado. This means he is pardoned and his life is spared. The crowd asks for this using white handkerchiefs. If the leader agrees, he shows an orange handkerchief.

History shows these bulls have very old roots. Some people think they come from wild bulls in the Iberian Peninsula. Genetic studies show they have a very old genetic pool. In May 2010, scientists achieved something new with them. They cloned a bull named Vasito for the first time. The new calf was named Got, which means "glass" in Valencian.

Some specific lines of bulls are very famous. The Miura line is known for being large and fierce. These bulls come from a ranch in the province of Seville. One Miura bull first appeared in Madrid on 30 April 1849. These bulls have a reputation for being very cunning. Some people even say they can learn quickly in the arena. This makes them very different from other types of cattle you might know.
