Spalax

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Spalax is a type of rodent. We call them blind mole-rats. These animals live under the ground. They live in Eastern Europe. They also live in parts of Asia.

These rats cannot see. They live a life that is subterranean. This means they live under the earth. They stay in the dark dirt.

Scientists used to think all blind mole-rats were in one group. They called this group Spalax. But new studies changed that. Some species formed a new group. This happened a long time ago. A sea grew between two lands. This sea split the animals apart. Now there are two groups. One group is Spalax. The other group is Nannospalax.

There are many kinds of Spalax. One is the Giant blind mole-rat. Another is the Sandy blind mole-rat. There is also the Mehely's blind mole-rat. Some types may even be extinct. This means they are gone forever. It is neat to study these small animals.
