SpaceX is a private American company that builds rockets and space tools.

Its main headquarters is at a site called Starbase in Texas.

The company wants to make space travel much cheaper. Elon Musk founded the company in 2002 to reach this goal. He hopes to eventually build a colony on Mars. SpaceX does more orbital launches every year than almost anyone else. This includes large national space programs. They work closely with NASA and the United States Armed Forces.

One special way SpaceX works is through reusability. Most rockets are thrown away after one use, but SpaceX builds them to land.

They use a method called vertical takeoff and landing, or VTOL. This means the rocket goes straight up and lands straight down. The Falcon 9 rocket is famous for this ability. In 2015, they showed the first successful landing of a first stage. By 2017, they even flew a landed stage again. As of May 2025, these rockets have landed and flown over 450 times. This helps them reach one to three launches every single week.

Elon Musk started this journey after meeting with the Mars Society in 2001.

He originally wanted to land a greenhouse on Mars. He even tried to buy a rocket from Russia. When that did not work, he decided to build his own. He started the company in a warehouse in El Segundo, California. Early workers came from big companies like Boeing. The first rocket they built was the Falcon 1. It was hard at first because the first three launches failed. The fourth launch in September 2008 was finally a success.

SpaceX has many different tools for different jobs.

The Dragon capsule carries cargo and people to the International Space Station. In 2020, they began using Dragon 2 for crewed missions.

They also have Starlink, which is a group of many satellites. These satellites provide internet to people across the globe. They are even building Starship right now. Starship is meant to be the largest launch vehicle in history. It aims to be fully reusable and very adaptable.

SpaceX is a very valuable company in the world today.

In 2025, an offer to buy shares valued the company at $800 billion. This makes it the most valuable private company in the world. They are also working on the Artemis program for NASA. This program will help humans go to the moon. SpaceX is even developing its own space suit through the Polaris program. While they are private now, they might have an initial public offering in 2026. This would mean more people could own parts of the company.
