This area lies entirely in the Northern Hemisphere. Maritime Southeast Asia consists of Brunei, East Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor-Leste.

It covers almost all countries except for parts of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the northern Philippines. The mountains in Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and parts of Indonesia belong to the Alpide belt. Other areas, like the Philippines and much of Indonesia, sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire. 
Human history in this region reaches back millions of years. Evidence shows that Homo erectus lived here about 1.5 million years ago. 

Culture and politics have changed significantly over time. Historically, the region was shaped by Indian, Chinese, and Muslim influences. 
Southeast Asia is incredibly crowded and diverse. It has more than 670 million people. This is about 8.5% of the total world population. It is the third most populous region in Asia. 

The region's geography connects it to many global systems. Its location makes it a vital area for maritime trade. The Strait of Malacca is a key passage for ships.
